My freshman year of college was rough. I was living across the country from my family, on my own for the first time in my life, and making new friends was not one of my best skills. The only way that I knew how to cope was to focus all my attention on softball instead of how lonely I was becoming. However, this left me empty once softball wasn’t going well for me and I didn’t have a starting position.

When I had nothing left to turn to, I realized there was something greater missing in my life. I was longing to be loved unconditionally and to be in a relationship with God, but I didn’t know how that was possible. On January 26, 2010, someone explained to me that Jesus died so that I could live. On that day, I prayed and received that gift and was accepted into God’s family.

I learned that if I ever felt alone, I could turn to God’s word (the Bible) and see how much love He has for me. Now I knew that no matter what happened, my value and worth was not dependent on my performance. When it came to softball, I felt a sense of freedom for the first time in my life and was able to play with thankfulness back to God rather than playing with a fear of failure. In the Bible, Zephaniah 3:17 says, “The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing."

Now that my life is devoted to Jesus Christ, I am able to have a positive attitude even when things don’t go my way because I know God cares for me and accepts me.
